What is Mediation?

Mediation is a method of resolving disputes by using an independent third party. The mediator will enable the different views of the parties to be openly discussed. This leads to the finding of common ground which is then used as a basis for an overall agreement to be reached. It can be used in any sort of dispute but I specialise in helping to solve disputes between family members.

Who is Mediation for?

Historically the main purpose for mediation was to help parents with problems around their children. Nowadays, mediators are often asked to help with matters of financial relief - houses, mortgages, maintenance for the children and the least well off spouse, and basic money arrangements immediately following a separation, which can be a difficult time financially.

"All Issues Mediation" covers both children and finance at the same time.

Mediation is also used to help disputes involving other family members such as grandparents.

People use mediators when they want help to negotiate with each other. A couple often find it very difficult to talk to each other when their relationship turns sour. Sometimes they can't bear to be in the same room as each other and they know that if they do talk it will degenerate into an unpleasant argument. However, matters need to be looked at and often quickly. Topics around the couple's children such as where they should live, where they should go to school, and when they should stay with their father or mother. There might be problems with money and mortgages which need to be addressed. Sometimes things cannot wait and the couple have to find a way to talk them through for both their sakes. The mediator is trained to facilitate their discussions and help them to come to workable solutions.
